The Global Uplift Project in SLabs

Spread the love

Overview

Detailed description

Only underprivileged schools were chosen by Rotary Clubs. RC Bunga, on 2nd July 2025 presented St George SS Makukuulu, located in Bukomansimbi District. NCDP, the local implementing Agency, requested for a NEEDS ASSESSMENT of the school which we presented on 10th July and the school was selected. The Lab equipment was procured by NCDP by 25th July 2025 ready for delivery to the school. The project was offered to Bunga, implemented and completed in July 2025. There are 860 students, of which about 470 offer Biology, Chemistry and Physics, but ONLY Physics had 30% equipment. Poor performance was always registered for years since Senior 4 & 6 students only offered Theory examinations. There are a fairly good number of Science teachers to implement this project, the students are excited and willing to improve their grades in 2025 GCE (S4) and HSC(S6) Examinations. The Lab is big enough but the Headmistress promised to convert one small classroom into a Laboratory.

Community Needs, Project Impact and Sustainability

Community Assessment: How the project team learned about the community’s needs

RC Bunga has two Global Grants in Bukomansimbi District. The WASH-USAID BIGASA, completed in 2022. And THE RO-WASH KITANDA, (GG 2458157) which is about to be implemented. Both these project required intensive needs assessments especially in schools. It was during this time that we noticed the “predicament” rural Universal Education Schools faced in absence of Clean Water and Sanitation as well as Science Laboratories.

Project Impact: How the project will help the community after the project ends

Government of Uganda started prioritising science based curriculum and vocations in orderr to equip scientific knowledge and artisan/vocational skills. This added to the Integrated hands on New Curriculum will assist the students who havent continued to University to do shorter courses to create self employment by opening workshops in their communities. Also, the community, read parents, will support the school by enrolling their children, and in the long run the economic enpowerment of the community will have a multiplier effect with more vocational colleges mushrooming to accomodate students from St George SSS and others. Vocational institutions will create more jobs and supply chains formed in the community.

Sustainability: How the benefits of the project will continue afterward

TGUP started with four Clubs as a pilot project to enable collaboration and integration with Rotary International to make it a Rotary supported project to cover the whole country and to support all schools they will equip. RC Bunga is a beneficiary, and therefore the long term sustainability can be answered by TGUP in SLabs.
